Virtualbox Seamless Mode Workaround w/ Compiz

GNOME + Compiz + VirtualBox

Quickly; just wanted to help promote this blog post. If you have Gnome and you’re running Compiz and you’ve notice a very weird graphical glitch when running Virtualbox in Seamless mode, then here’s the workaround for you! The blog post is by Rick Fleming.

I tried it and it works. It wasn’t extremely easy to understand though. At first, I didn’t know where the .exe file was. You can find the executable file in “VBoxWorkaround\obj\Release\VBoxWorkaround.exe”. Create a shortcut and put it in your “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup” folder.

I had the “failed to initialize properly” as well on a clean install of XP Professional SP3. went to the original site of the "patch" and saw that he wrote it in .NET,... installed .NET 1.1 and got a new error saying .NET 2.0.something was required. installed .NET 2 (SP1 I think) and it began working without any issues, and this little hack does work quite well.. makes seamless mode a pleasure.

I'll second the "failed to initialize properly" error, although I think it might have to do with a newer windows update or something because this workaround has worked very well for me in the past

I get a 'File failed to initialise properly' error.

No I don't know why it's doing that. I'm not the developer that created this workaround. I would suggest that you email or comment the guy from the link in the article. That should take you to his site. Sorry. I have noticed that this workaround doesn't work directly in my Windows guest. The file names were too weird for Windows to handle. So; I have a shared drive setup to my linux box and I call it from there. It's a little slower, but it works. Try that.

I'm glad you found it helpful. I know I did when I found the original post! I can't wait for Compiz to be more stable w/ nVidia cards. I'm having issues with Urban Terror while having Compiz enabled. :( Oh well, one issue at a time!
