BTW, weight training is an awesome way to lose weight and gain muscle mass at the same time for overall improvement of health and FEELING of health... nothing like sore abs to remind yourself how awesome you are :D

BMI is a liar for pretty much everyone except for the average person and no one is average... so basically it's a huge crock. From personal experience I find it more effective to set goals such as "do 10 chin ups without dying" or "run a 10k without stopping" rather than "bench 100" or "lose 20 pounds" basically for the same reason as weighing weekly instead of daily. I don't fret about the little fluctuations, but will instead be encouraged by consistent improvement. Of course I still weigh myself obsessively (lol) but I don't record it.

I'm not quite in the same boat, I'm trying to gain weight, so my routine is designed around that. If you go with an anaerobic routine, pumping iron can lose you a lot of weight quite quickly. My dad's "lost" 12 pounds in the last six months, which means he lost probably close to 30 in fat and gained a bunch back in muscles... he's lost some 2 inches around his gut and he is obviously much more toned.

Taking care of yourself is so, so important, because otherwise you won't have the energy and gusto to take care of everyone else! That's why when the oxygen mask falls out in the plane you're supposed to put it on yourself first, then assist someone else. I think you'll find that it's not a selfish thing at all because you'll end up helping everyone around you be healthier!
