How Wise is the Group?

Last night I went to my third LUG meeting at Emory University School of Law facility. For those that don’t follow my social foot prints, I’m a part of a very well established Linux User Group called Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts. These guys have been in the game for a long time and vividly remember the days when x server wasn’t even a twinkle in their distro’s eye. Well last night one of the members, James Taylor, presented the Microsoft Exchange contender, Novell GroupWise.
At first, I thought we would talk about the online collaboration tool, eGroupWare, but I soon realized that this was yet another network or system admin tool. So; I knew the content would be out of my scope of understanding. I was indeed correct on my assumption and found myself dozing off a little more than I’d like. I ended up leaving before the presentation was finished, but I was getting really tired and I wanted to get home bad.
Don’t get me wrong, the presentation was done well, but the content was not directly relevant to me – and it had already been a long day. I didn’t get a chance to ask, but being exposed to this product – it reminded me A LOT of Google Apps. So; I wonder if the folks at Google got their inspiration from this tool. It looks like a great piece of software if I wanted to run a solid nonMicrosoft house, but for the time being – I’ve switched to The Cloud.
Correction: When I originally posted this, I stated that GroupWise was open source. Whoops, my mistake. It most certainly IS NOT open source.

Groupwise is “open source”?

I don’t think Groupwise is open source… or at least they forgot to tell their customers. The product has a long history and is more of a hack ontop of many (the code still does things like you were doing stuff on 1990 NDS). I think the 8 code is much more of them looking at other products and trying to catchup versus the opposite.
All I can say is that after being on groupware for a couple of years.. I actually yearned to go back to Microsoft Exchange…

So I don’t see how one can claim GroupWise is a MS Exchange contender in open source… That’s a very misleading statement.

Stephen: I might have been duped then. The presenter was very enthusiastic about GroupWise and how awesome it was, etc. He’s had a number of years working with it.
Hub: Is it the fact that I said “open source”? You know what. Now that I think about it, he did say it was closed source. Hmm… I must have assumed that our LUG’s presentations would always be on open source programs. I’ll edit the blog. Thanks for making note of that error.

Yeah that sounds less ambiguous. Thanks for the correction.
