Fedora 9 vs. Ubuntu 8.04

I’m a bit confused by the methods people go about reporting news now-a-days. I’m probably late to the game, but it seems that everyone is stealing, borrowing, whatever from each other and you have to dig down into 2 or 3 levels of blogs in order to get the one true article that was written about the subject.

I forgot how I found it, but the title “Ubunut 8.04 vs. Fedora 9″ caught my eye. I followed it to www.OSnews.com to read a small excerpt of a much bigger story found elsewhere. How long has this been going on? I remember when I first started reading GoogleNews, I noticed that they would have an intro sentence and the real story was somewhere else. That trend (whether started by Google or not) is the norm sharing stories.

I use GoogleReader and it’s amazing how all these supposed news web sites are basically fancy portals to the real news web sites.

My Family is a Linux-Family

May 27th, 2008 by Marc F.

GNU/Linux

Technically, my immediate family is a linux-family; meaning that we run some form of linux on our main computers as our full-time operating system. My wife made the switch this weekend and she was pretty excited about it. We all know it’s going to be a rough ride until we fully understand how things work, but this is very cool news. I’m running Fedora 8 and she’s running openSUSE 10.3.

We wanted her to run Ubuntu 8.04, but had a very tough time getting it to install on ANY computer we have in the house. It keeps freezing up on the boot menu. So; until we figure out what the deal is we looked distros that are backed by major companies.

I Feel Like a Gangsta’

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Since I have tons of financial responsibilities, I cannot buy a next-gen console. I’m itchin’ for GTA IV, Grand Turismo 5, etc… I did get a chance to play GTA IV at my neighbor’s house the other day and I fell in love with it. Aw, it’s sool cool and he has a big screen TV too so it looked really nice. With touching GTA, it’s hard to go back home and NOT play it. I downloaded GTA San Andreas for my linuxbox and everything ran without a hitch via Wine.

I played some World of Warcraft last night (dinged to 46 on my priest) and was pretty tired - so I said my “gnite” to the guild members and intended to go to bed, but I found myself double-clicking on the San Andreas icon and to my surprise - I was up till 2:00 AM - AGAIN!!!?!?!?! It’s funny playing the game on my PC. I certainly had to get comfortable with the controls - it really handles different than the PS2 controller, but I did notice that I took my time with everything. I actually got more emersed into the world than I did when I played it on my console.

Virtual Machine

April 8th, 2008 by Marc F.

I’m toying with the idea of using a virtual machine inside of linux.  It’s been about two+ weeks or so since I last logged into my windows partition.  And to be honest it’s mainly because my activation is up and I just don’t want to try and figure it out anymore.  I learned the other day that I can run VM software inside of linux (other OSs too) and actually save a particular state (just like I used to with video game emulators) and if anything goes wrong - just load from my last save.  This can probably work as well, in regards to activation.  I don’t plan on installing or using heavy applications - so in theory, if I get my installation fine and immediatly install the apps I plan on using.  Then I can save that state and whenever things go wrong just reload my last state and I’ll have another 30-days of bliss windows usage.  Just a thought.

I’ve Taken Up Hockey

Marc and his temporary splint

Ha-ha, I’m joking this picture is what my temporary splint looks like.  My wife says it looks like I’m a hockey player of some sort.  I think it looks cool anyway.  I see a hand therapist twice a week and my ortho once a week (so far).  I have hourly and bi-hourly (is that even a word) hand exercises to get the motion back.  They are working, but it’s a pain in the arss to do them every hour.  I guess that’s what I get for busting up my hand.  Well, enjoy the laugh.

Week 2: Broke Hand

March 17th, 2008 by Marc F.

I have been so out of commissioned since I broke my 5th metacarpal in my right hand.  I use my left hand for everything and my typing is horrible.  I used a couple fingers on my left hand and I keep my responses short.  I see a hand rehabilitation specialist Wednesday - for a removable splint.  After six to eight weeks I then get the rod out of my finger.  Surgery is expensive.

I Broke My Writting Hand

Boy does that suck.  A day or so after getting my new computer up - I broke a bond in my right hand. It takes too long to type with my left fingers so I’m going to stop now.

New Computer is Finally Up!

March 5th, 2008 by Marc F.

Man, I’ve waited almost 2 weeks since I put the computer together, but after a well waited period - my home desktop is up and running.  Right now it has Windows Vista Home Premium on there, but I plan on dual-booting it with Linux (Fedora or Umbutu).  I am totally excited!  I think because it’s dual-core, I can install programs and continue working all at the same time - what a machine!

It’s funny how I’ve changed over the years from when I first started with computers.  Back in the days I would make homebrew machines, making sure I had a lot of expansion options available.  Now; I could care less, I probably won’t use them.  I don’t even care about specs that much anymore.  It’s got a Nvidia 8600 video card (for gaming), 2GB DDR-2 RAM, 250GB hard drive, blah blah blah.  It’s sweet, that’s because it works!

My Political View

February 29th, 2008 by Marc F.

 Vote button

As of date I consider myself to be a republican.. what!?!  I know a black republican.. and I’m not even rich yet either!  I’m not really big on politics - although I’ve always wanted to be.  Sounds funny right!  I attempt to listen to NPR when driving to work and I try and catch CNN, but I really don’t.

Yesterday a family friend, Debon Jr. stopped by and we talked a bit about politics, etc.  I was also watching CNN and I realized that I don’t watch the news because we always have kiddie shows on for the children.  Alex asked a couple times to watch Thomas the Tank Engine, but I was kind of focused on watching CNN.

Well, either way - I’m going to try and keep up-to-date on what’s going on.  All my electorial life I’ve never really tried to learn the system nor understand it.  Recently; for the primaries - I was confused about my experience.  When in line I filled out the card they gave us and I marked that I was republican.  This election year I’m actually in favor for Barack Obama, but since I put down republican on my card - they only gave me republican choices.  I chose McCain, but I really wanted to vote for Obama.  Since then I’ve done a little research into understanding how our voting system works and I’ll post stuff here from time-to-time.

A Tech Retrospective

I got this article from my uncle Andrew. This article is awesome - I used to complain about how I got my first laptop for $1300 and the specs I can get now for $1100 out beat that 10 to 1. My first laptop was some where around 2001.
